What is HTML?

In this topic, we will see about HTML language generally used in design the page. The Hypertext markup language (HTML) is used to structural representation for the web page. Simply means we can change the appearance of web pages.

Browser like Chrome, Firefox can understand the HTML languages. It basically tells the browser that where should display a text, where should display images/videos.

What is the difference between HTML & HTML5 ?

The major difference between HTML & HTML5 is we can now able to add multimedia content whithout media player or flash in HTML5 by using <audio>,<video> tags.

<header>,<section>,<article> new elements are added in HTML5 by using this tags you can make your page more meanigfull.

The main advantage of HMTL5 is its browser compatibility. The browsers like chrome, safari, firefox can easily understand the HTML language.

Also, the page design by HTML5 is generally platform compatible means any page you design on the web can be responsive for mobile also. So, this adaptive design technique is the main advantage of HTML5.

The new attributes have been introducing like email, URL, charset, ping. Global attributes have been introducing like id, repeat, tab index.

Tha basic HTML page is look like :

<!DOCTYPE html>

<html lang=”en”>

<head>

</head>

<body>

</body>

</html>

<!DOCTYPE : It will represents the document type.

<html> : Tha main tag that is the root tag for the HTML.It’s the main container of the page.

<head> : It basically contains the <meta>,<title> tag for the page.

<body> : It basically contains the content which you want to show on browser.Your content actually comes here.

What is the <meta> tag used in HTML ?

Basically <meta> tag is metadata about that HTML page.It’s basic information about that page.The <meta> tag is always available inside the <head> tag of the HTML page.<meta> tag is not displayed on the browser but it can be helpful to the browser to manage the content of the page.

General example of <meta> tags

<meta http-equiv=”refresh” content=”60″>

=>http-equiv : It provides HTTP header.

=>content : It refresh the page after every 60 seconds.

<meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0″>

=>viewport : The viewport is the user’s viewable area of the screen.It can be smaller for the mobile devices and varies according to screen size.

=>width=device-width : It’s define width of the screen.This also varies  according to screen size of the device.

=>initial-scale=1.0 : This is used to define zoom level for the screen.

<meta name=”author” content=”Author Name here”>

name=> It specify the name for metadata.Here it’s author,so it defines the name of the author.

content=> It actually represents the value for name attribute.

What is the difference between HTML & XHTML ?

Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) is a XML Based version of HTML.XHTML is supported by almost all browsers.

The <!DOCTYPE> declaration is mandatory for XHTML.

Also <head>,<html>,<body>,<title> elements are must to develop any XHTML page.

Every element in XHTML is always in lowercase.

For Example :

You can’t write :

<HEAD></HEAD>

You must write :

It must be <head></head>

Every attribute in XHTML is always in lowercase.

For Example :

You can’t write :

<meta NAME=”viewport” CONTENT=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0″>

You must write :

<meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0″>

Every attribute must always be quoted.

You can’t write :

<meta name=viewport content=width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0>

You must write :

<meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0″>
